Day 1: Brisbane to Stanthorpe (3 hours, 220 km)

Begin your journey in the heart of the Granite Belt, where Stanthorpe offers more than just beautiful scenery. Start with an exploration of Donnelly’s Castle, the secret hideout of Australia’s longest-roaming bushranger, Captain Thunderbolt. Wander through the giant granite boulders and imagine the legends that unfolded here.

After your morning adventure, treat yourself to handmade European-style chocolates at Heavenly Chocolate, nestled at the foothills of Girraween National Park. Satisfy your sweet tooth while soaking in the peaceful surroundings of this charming spot.

Settle in for the night at one of the many boutique accommodation offerings in Stanthorpe, where the crisp country air guarantees a restful sleep.

Day 2: Stanthorpe to Toowoomba (2 hours, 160 km)

Continue your journey north-east to Toowoomba, a city celebrated for its rich blend of history and culture. For a fashion filled detour, take a short trip outside Toowoomba to Forest Hill and browse the shelves of the many quaint and quirky boutiques.

In the afternoon, slow things down with a peaceful stroll through Ju Raku En, Australia’s largest and most traditionally designed Japanese Garden. With its tranquil ponds, sculpted greenery, and serene stone pathways, it’s the perfect spot to unwind.

Spend the night in Toowoomba, where you’ll experience the warm hospitality that Queensland Country is known for.

Day 3: Toowoomba to Chinchilla (2.5 hours, 200 km)

Make your way to Chinchilla, famous for its melons and rich farming history. Be sure to snap a photo with The Big Melon, a quirky icon that stands as a tribute to the town’s agricultural heritage.

For something truly unexpected, try your luck fossicking for the rare ‘Chinchilla Red’ petrified wood. Dating back to the Jurassic period, these treasures are scattered across the area, just waiting to be discovered. Visitors are required to buy a fossicking licence (and access fees) from the Chinchilla Visitor Information Centre.

Day 4: Chinchilla to Springsure (4.5 hours, 370 km)

Hit the road and journey into the rugged beauty of Springsure, surrounded by stunning landscapes. In the evening, head to Virgin Rock, a striking natural formation. As the sun sets, watch the golden hues light up the rock, giving it the appearance of the Virgin Mary cradling baby Jesus. It’s a moment of quiet awe that connects you with the raw beauty of the land.

Stay overnight in Springsure, and take in the peaceful rural surroundings.

Day 5: Springsure to the Sapphire Gemfields (1.5 hours, 102 km)

Your final day takes you to the Sapphire Gemfields, home to the largest sapphire-bearing area in the Southern Hemisphere. Roll up your sleeves and try your hand at fossicking for sapphires – whether you uncover a hidden gem or enjoy the thrill of the hunt, it’s an experience that captures the true spirit of Queensland Country.

Wander through local shops, chat with friendly fossickers, and dive into the region’s rich gem mining history as you wrap up your adventure.

You can stay overnight in the Sapphire Gemfields, enjoying the wide-open skies and laidback country vibe, or begin your journey home, carrying the memories of this unique adventure with you.
