What's On

Ready to escape the hustle and bustle? It’s time to slow things down and dive into a week of fresh air, laidback vibes, and unbeatable country charm. This 7-day road trip from Brisbane takes you on a looping adventure through the heart of Queensland Country, where every day offers something new — from paddling at peaceful dams to wandering through sunflower-filled fields. Let’s hit the road and soak up the best of summer, country style.

Day 1: Brisbane to Stanthorpe (Approx. 3 hours drive)

Kick off your adventure by heading southwest from Brisbane towards the Southern Downs & Granite Belt Region. The drive to Queen Mary Falls is the perfect way to get into the country spirit. Stretch your legs and feel the cool mist on your skin as the waterfall tumbles 40 metres down — nature’s way of saying, “Welcome to the country.”

Keep cruising to Stanthorpe, where you’ll spend the night. If it’s in season, don’t miss the chance to pick your own apples or strawberries straight from the orchard. Fresh fruit doesn’t get any better than this — picked by your own hand and eaten on the go. Now, that’s summer.

Day 2: Stanthorpe to Goondiwindi (Approx. 2.5 hours drive)

Hit the road again, this time heading west towards Goondiwindi. Along the way, why not stop by one of the region’s boutique wineries? Enjoy a tasting of the local drops and take a moment to soak in the scenic vineyards that dot the countryside. It’s the perfect way to break up the drive and experience a little of Queensland’s country hospitality.

Once in Goondiwindi, it’s all about the water. Head to the Natural Heritage Water Park for an afternoon of fun. Bring your favourite floaties, kayak, or paddleboard, and cool down in style. Nothing beats splashing around in the sunshine.

Day 3: Goondiwindi Exploration Day

Slow things down with a full day to explore Goondiwindi. Fancy another dip at the Natural Heritage Water Park? Or maybe a stroll through town to discover its local charm? Wander through one of Goondiwindi’s many boutiques, where you’ll find unique local treasures, crafts, and country-style homewares.

Be sure to explore the Goondiwindi Art Trail, where murals and sculptures bring the town’s heritage to life. It’s the perfect way to soak up local history and admire some creative, community-driven artwork.

Feeling adventurous? Grab your walking shoes and explore the local tracks, or simply find a shady spot by the river and watch the world float by. However you spend the day, it’s all about taking it easy, country-style.

Day 4: Goondiwindi to Toowoomba (Approx. 2.5 hours drive)

Wave goodbye to Goondiwindi and make your way northeast to Toowoomba, the Garden City. Keep your eyes peeled as you head towards Toowoomba – you might be lucky enough to spot seas of sunflowers lining the roads. It’s an Insta-worthy scene that’ll have you pulling over for a quick snap or two. These golden beauties are a true sign you’ve left the city behind.

When the heat kicks in, cool off with a visit to the Queensland Museum Cobb+Co. It’s more than just a history lesson — this spot will take you on a journey through Queensland’s past, all while you’re chilling in the air-con. Perfect!

Come evening, take a slow stroll through Queens Park or one of Toowoomba’s famous gardens. There’s something about being surrounded by flowers that makes the pace of life slow right down.

Day 5: Toowoomba to Bunya Mountains (Approx. 1.5 hours drive)

Today, it’s off to the cooler heights of the Bunya Mountains. With summer temps rarely cracking 27°C, this is the perfect escape. As you wind your way up the mountain, the air gets fresher, and you’ll feel the hustle of the city melt away.

Spend the day exploring the walking trails under the shade of ancient bunya pines. Wallabies hop around, birds sing overhead, and the views are nothing short of breathtaking. If there’s one place to slow down and breathe, it’s here.

After your cool off, it’s time to hit the road again, heading east to Somerset. Whether you’re into fishing, boating, or just kicking back by the water, you’ll love it here. Cast a line at Lake Somerset or Lake Wivenhoe, or get out on the water with your boat, jet ski, or paddleboard.
