What's On

Captivating even the most modern travellers with the allure of freshness, tradition, romance and charm, step back in time and swap the bitumen for the tracks as you watch the beauty of Queensland Country pass by on one of the region’s many train journeys.

From nostalgic steam trains that embark on short scenic journeys to modern trains that travel through the heart of Queensland, there is something for every type of traveller.

DownsSteam Tourist Railway

Located in the heritage-rich city of Toowoomba, DownsSteam Tourist Railway is a must-visit for all train and vintage machinery enthusiasts. In 2024, the dedicated efforts of volunteers culminated in the restoration of the last remaining steam locomotive built at the historic Toowoomba Foundry Company – the C16-106 Southern Cross Works No. 28 circa 1914. This train, alongside their second steam train the BB181/4-1037 steam locomotive, regularly transport passengers on scenic journeys to nearby towns and villages. If you’re short on time, the museum itself is open three days a week, offering the chance to explore a variety of engines, carriages and more.

Downs Explorer

The Downs Explorer, based at Warwick’s former historic Locomotive Depot - now known as the Warwick Railway Precinct – offers a true blast from the past with their C17 steam and DH45 diesel locomotives. The historic train tours take passengers through some of Queensland Country’s most picturesque landscapes, and the vintage carriage fleet further enhances the charm. Tours include trips to Stanthorpe with lunch at a winery, Clifton and Nobby with lunch at a historic pub, or trips where you just stay on board and admire the expansive views of distant mountain ranges and lush crops. Downs Explorer is a must for those who want to combine train travel with classic country experiences.

The Spirit of the Outback

For a longer journey, the Spirit of the Outback, operated by Queensland Rail, is the perfect way to explore Queensland. Departing from Brisbane twice a week and travelling to Longreach, this iconic train travels through five towns in the Central Queensland Highlands. Hop off in Emerald and spend a few days exploring the historic and natural attractions of the region, here’s our recommendation for 10 things to do. Then catch the next train onwards to Longreach, or grab a flight back to Brisbane if your holiday is complete. The onboard experience of Spirit of the Outback includes air-conditioned, comfortable seating or sleeping cabins (the full journey is 26 hours, so we recommend splurging), and dining options featuring fresh regional produce, making it ideal for both adventure seekers and those looking for a leisurely journey to Outback Queensland.

Westlander

The Westlander, also operated by Queensland Rail and connects Brisbane to Charleville, traversing three captivating regions of Queensland Country along the way. After leaving Brisbane the train soon reaches the fertile plains of the Lockyer Valley, known as ‘Australia’s Salad Bowl’ due to its abundance of fresh produce. The route then climbs into the iconic rolling hills and valleys of the Toowoomba Region. As the train heads west, it reaches the Western Downs, an area of expansive cropping country and open plains that stretch as far as the eye can see. Finally, the train reaches Outback Queensland, passing through Roma before reaching the end of the line in Charleville. Operating twice a week, this is a great way to admire the country scenery without having to focus on the road.

No matter which train trip you choose, you’ll be treated to the unique and diverse beauty of Queensland Country. Whether you're enjoying the nostalgia of steam engines or relaxing on a long-distance, modern train, the railway journeys in this region offer something special for every traveller. So sit back, relax, and let the tracks take you through the heart of Queensland Country.
