14 horsepower events in the Southern Queensland Country that will get your engine revving
If you’re looking to put the pedal to the metal, mark your diary for these motorsports and car shows in our region.
Explore 161 km of scenic countryside on the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail, winding through charming towns, iconic bakeries, and breathtaking landscapes. With 27 historic stations and 11 unique sections, this self-guided journey is an immersive way to connect with Queensland’s beautiful countryside. Whether you’re cycling, walking, or even riding a horse, the trail offers something for everyone.
You can tackle the entire trail in one go, or break it up into shorter sections if you don’t have three days to spare. And while this itinerary starts in Yarraman (ideal for a mostly downhill ride), you can also reverse the trail and begin from Wulkuraka if you prefer. Ready to ride? Here’s how to do it:
Begin your journey at the Yarraman trailhead, located near the Heritage Museum. Take a moment to soak in the rich history of this small town before you hit the trail. The first part of the ride will take you through peaceful forests and gently rolling terrain as you head towards Blackbutt.
At Blackbutt, reward yourself with a visit to the iconic Blackbutt Bakery, where a delicious, buttery pie is a must-have. It’s the perfect pit stop before continuing on to your evening destination.
End your day in the charming, historic town of Linville, where you can enjoy a hearty dinner and spend the night. Choose between a traditional pub meal at the Linville Hotel or a short cycle to Moore for dinner at Kai Lounge – both great options for a relaxing evening.
Rest your head for the night at Rail Trail Refuge in Linville, a small scale purpose built accommodation for cyclists of the BVRT. Take the opportunity to stretch your muscles using the yoga mats provided, or relax in the plunge pool. With undercover bike storage, ebike charging facilities and bike maintenance equipment available for guests, both you and your bike will be refreshed for day two of the trail.
After breakfast in Moore at the welcoming Kai Lounge, continue your journey along the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail towards the town of Toogoolawah. This part of the trail takes you through beautiful, rolling countryside with wide-open skies.
Arriving in Toogoolawah, enjoy a well-deserved lunch. Stop at the Exchange Hotel for a classic pub meal or, if you’re passing through on the weekend, visit the Picnic Society for something a little more unique.
Once you’re refreshed, get back on the trail and make your way towards Esk, passing through more of the scenic landscapes that Queensland Country is known for. When you arrive in Esk, you’ll find a range of accommodation options to suit your needs. Before settling in for the night, treat yourself to a stop at Brisbane Valley Roasters, conveniently located right on the trail, where you can enjoy a freshly roasted coffee to unwind after your day’s ride.
Park your bike at Esk Caravan Park for the night, where caravans aren't required. With a range of cabins, motel rooms and glamping tents, there is something for every type of traveller. Meet fellow BVRT adventurers at the undercover entertainment area, or let your muscles soak in the heated pool.
Start your final day in Esk with a hearty breakfast at Nash Gallery and Café, then set off for the longest and final leg of your journey along the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail. As you ride, you’ll pass through picturesque rural landscapes, heading towards Lowood.
Stop in Lowood for a break, depending on your timing. Enjoy morning tea at Rudy and Ada’s Café or grab lunch at the Club Hotel before getting back on the trail.
Your next stop is Fernvale, where no visit is complete without sampling the famous pastries at the Fernvale Bakery. You can also visit the Patisserie in the Fernvale Shopping Centre for even more sweet treats before continuing your ride.
Finally, roll into the Wulkuraka trailhead, where your adventure on the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail reaches its final stop. As you take that last moment to catch your breath, reflect on the winding roads, wide-open skies, and warm country hospitality that have filled the last three days.
This ride is more than just a journey, it’s a true taste of Queensland Country. From farm-fresh food to awe-inspiring landscapes, every kilometre offers something special. So, pack your bags, jump on the bike, and let Queensland Country work its magic — because we all need a little country in our lives.
